Shortlisted - Holborn Library & Cockpit Arts 2016
Public Private Partnership with London Borough of Camden to deliver new library, workspace and homes
Otterlo London was shortlisted as part of a public competition via Selection Questionnaire and Dialogue process to partner London Borough of Camden.
Holborn Library was a milestone in the history of the modern public library, both as the first large, multi-functional, post-war library in London and for its pioneering architecture. Completed in 1956 by the Holborn Borough Council Architects’ Department under Sydney Cook who recruited London's most talented designers.
Camden ran a competition in 2016 to find a development partner to secure the delivery of improved facilities for the existing community and commercial uses on the Site enabled by the the release of the site's capacity for private and affordable housing.
Working with listed buildings the shortlisted scheme proposed a public street through the library and beyond to a working mews bound by units for Cockpit Arts, a social enterprise & business incubator for craftspeople. The proposed design and programme allowed all existing uses and users to remain onsite throughout the works. Shortlisted for such a project demonstrates an ability to manage and co-ordinate highly complex issues with a safe pair of hands.
U+I was selected as the preferred development partner.
